NOTES:

Manufactured by Marathon Products Inc. 50 Norwalk Conn, FTD, this 1951-1957 Adirondack baseball bat was fitted with an indicating gauge responsive to circular or angular velocity. The patent US2780098A, was applied for in 1955 by the inventor Arthur M Maroth, of Marathon Products Inc. The bat was designed as a training device, to measure the speed of your swing. With today's game being dominated by technology, sabermetrics, and “exit velocity," this bat was way ahead of it's time. The bat was also offered in a Little League model.

The gauge is responsive to circular or angular velocity, and more particularly used for mounting in or on a baseball bat; tennis or badminton racket, golf club or the like to indicate the circular or angular velocity of the hitting stroke, which velocity is a function of the speed and distance of travel of the struck ball or other object. A movable weight on the housing, between the retracted and extended positions against spring action, becomes extended due to centrifugal force when the piece is swung, and is then held in any extended position by a releasable catch. The indicator shows the degree of extension of the weight, and gives a reading that is proportional to the force of the swing.

The gauge which is screwed into the barrel of the baseball bat, reads out in MPH. The gauge can be reset by manually depressing the button.
