NOTES:

This 1920's M.R. Campbell Inc. No. 30 Official Indoor Baseball Bat features the popular Camel logo. The chain-link bordered center brand oval centers the camel that is flanked by a baseball on each side. Above Reads M.R. Campbell, INC. and below Tullahoma - Tenn. The barrel is stamped "Official Indoor" and the handle still has the original grip tape.

Indoor baseball was invented in 1887 by George Hancock. The game became popular with Colleges and High school girls and boys. When the game was taken outdoors around 1907, it was called “playground ball,” and eventually renamed softball.

Founded by Michael Ross Campbell in 1870, the M.R. Campbell Co. operated a hub & spoke company in Tullahoma, Tenn. Manufacturing automobile parts, carriages and buggy shafts, M.R. Campbell entered the baseball bat market by the 1920's. They also manufactured golf shafts and other sporting goods of wood. Just as JF Hillerich Co. did, they began to manufacturer baseball bats from wagon tongues that had been used for covered wagons. The company remained in operation until 1935.
