NOTES:

The bats were made by the Ames Hanes co., just after the 1909 season and sold nationally in ball fields as a souvenir throughout the 1910's. The bats were made in two sizes, 26" and 30" have a tapered handle and have a center stamping that reads "Official Ty Cobb Ball Bat Made in USA 1909" The bats are made of Georgia Pine, from the area where Ty Cobb lived. Made of soft wood the bats are commonly found in poor condition, with knots, indentations, wormholes, and signs of warping.

The value is based on baseball bats that loosely fall into the very Good - Excellent condition, grade range. If a baseball bat is found in close to or in near mint condition it could double the value, but the bulk of the bats that are found in the collectors market are in Good-Very good condition and sell for about $50.-$100.

In 1909 Ty Cobb batted .377. If the manufacture of the bats, Ames Hanes, waited 2 years, the bat would have celebrated Ty Cobb's MVP like season and the bats would have had a 1911 stamp. In 1911 Cobb hit .420 with 248 hits, and 127 RBI's. The first modern day MVP Award would not be given out until 1931, but Cobb did win the Chalmers Award, given to the "most important and useful player to the club and to the league".
