  Pneumatico Bat Company Baseball Bat

  • CIRCA - 1906-1907
  • MANUFACTURER - Pneumatico Co.

NOTES:

The Pneumatico Baseball Bat was the brainchild of Charles P. Young, a prominent business man of York, PA, and a senior member of the firm of Young and Busser, cigar and tobacco jobbers. Young, held many patents which included; Coin and slot machine(1893), Rural-delivery letter-box(1903), and a Top-spinning device(1902) that would spin a top then eject it onto a table for the amusement of children.

Young applied for a patent for the Pneumatic baseball bat, which had a hollow air-filled core. There are no records that the patent was approved, but Young secured the trademark for the word "Pneumatico," in 1906, which was used or the center brand. The knob on the bat was branded in white; "Manufactured by Pneumatico, Bat Co. York, PA."

The bat was produced and sold at the Young and Busser, Centre Square cigar store, which carried a "large line of Base Ball Supplies." The cigar store which also bears the name of co-owner John H. Busser, housed a pool hall, and carried a variety of items such as; walking canes, umbrellas, pocket books, dog collars, cigars, tobacco & smokers' articles.

The 1906 ad below states; "The Pneumatico base ball bat helps the player to make hits on account of its perfect balance and elasticity. The York team proved it by making the best batting record last year in the Tri-State League, using the bat almost exclusively, and not one broke from June until the end of the season." Pictured below in the left column is the barrel top with the plug missing.

The Federal Arms Co. sporting goods store located at 116 N Pennsylvania St., IN, sold the Pneumatico baseball bat in 1907. The cigar store owner, Charles P. Young passed away in 1912 from a bronchial infection, and in 1916 Kaufman's Market Square Underselling store, bought out the overstock and liquidated the bats which had a retail price of $1.00, for .39¢ each.
