  • CIRCA 1974 - (Denmark, ME)
  • MANUFACTURER - R.G. Johnson

NOTES:

The R.G. Johnson Sebago Lake Bat Company was founded in 1934 by Rupert Johnson of Brownfield, ME. Johnson was a legendary sports figure throughout Maine who coached at Standish High School, and as a sideline, began making baseball bats for his team. He worked up quite a business. He hunted out his own timber, chopped it down, seasoned it well, and then turns out the finished product. His baseball bats were a big hit with players at Bates College.

Johnson was also a scout for the Milwaukee Braves and other professional teams. He was voted into the Maine Sports Hall of Fame in 1978 and a custom Johnson bat is at the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, New York. Custom made R.G. Johnson baseball bats were stamped with the last names of popular ball players such as Cobb, Mantle, and Bench.

In 1974, Robert Logan, the grandson of Rupert Johnson, took over the business that was moved to Denmark, ME. The company offered a wide variety of baseball, softball, Little League, and junior high bats. Seventy-one bat models, each one patterned after a favorite bat used by a major league player. The bats were shipped around the world, or purchased at their sporting goods store located in Bidgton.
