Joseph
J. Shivell became engaged in a baseball
bat manufacturing business in Wyoming
County, Pennsylvania, shortly before he
passed away in 1951. Shivell
explained to friends that he
believed "every boy in America should
have a baseball bat." Mr. Shivell was a
civic and political leader. He had been
active in politics for many years, but
his main interest was the children of
Plains Township. For 20 years he played
Santa Claus in the public and parochial
schools there, and in 1949 was awarded
a distinguished service certificate by
Joseph E. Conlon Post 588, American
Legion, for his civic work. Joseph
Shivell, was manager and sponsor of the
Falls, baseball team of the Abington
League when he died.
The only baseball bat model
produced has the "Shivell's Swing Boy
MFG, Falls, PA." center brand. The bats
were produced for a short time, and
there are only a handful that surfaced
in the collectors market.
Most of the baseball
bats produced were donated to local
youth leagues.
