  Standard Hardware Company Baseball Bats

MANUFACTURING PERIOD
Circa 1893-1899

WHOLESALER-RETAILOR
Standard Hardware Co.

NOTES

The hardware company was founded in 1862 by Messrs, Wetmore & Baldwin, and after several changes in personnel, the firm was incorporated in 1889, under the title of the Paige Brothers Company. The incorporators were Hon. D.R. Paige, A. T. Paige, Theodore Butler, J. Ed Good, G. S. Scott and F. W. Beebe.

In 1893 the company elected Theodore Butler President and General Manager; J. Edward Good, Vice President and Secretary. The name of the firm located at 146-148 South Main Street in Akron, Ohio, was then changed to the Standard Hardware company. In 1905 the Standard Hardware company and the Morgan & Runnell company consolidated under the name of the Hardware & Supply company.

Standard Hardware dealt in all kinds of factory and railroad supplies; general hardware; iron and steel; sheet metals; mechanics' tools; garden and farm implements; Taplin; Rice & Company's stoves and ranges; tinware; cutlery; powder; electrical appliances; guns and ammunition; and all other articles usually appertaining to the hardware trade.

Standard Hardware also carried a small line of sporting goods, Columbia Bicycles, "second-hand bicycles, and base ball goods. This "Standard" Trademark ring bat seems to be the only model produced. "Ring Bats" - decorated with painted or stained rings or bands around the center or and barrel, are common to the late 19th century.
