In 1844 Leonard and Lafayette Treman
formed Treman Brothers Hardware in
Ithaca NY. The Treman brother's cousin,
Leander King became a partner in 1857
and the business name was changed to
Treman King & Company. The corporation
dealt in hardware, house-furnishings,
and sporting goods, both retail and
wholesale. The company's Athletic
department was established in 1914.
Then in 1916 Treman-King added a new
sporting goods department to their
retail store, at State & Cayuga
streets. Treman King & Co. were widely
known for the Cayuga Indian head brand
of athletic goods.
In May, 1921 the Treman Co. building was destroyed by fire, and rebuilt in
1922, dedicating the 3rd floor to
sporting goods. 1933 incorporated as
the Treman, King Athletic Goods
Corporation, they had stores in;
Pittsburgh, PA, Nashville Tenn,
Washington, D.C., and Ithaca.
Treman-King then became division of
Lowe & Campbell Athletic goods who
along with Horace Partridge Athletic
Goods Co. merged with the larger,
Thomas E. Wilson Company (Wilson
Sporting Goods Co.) through
acquisitions.
These mergers were common, as large sporting goods companies such as
Wilson, Rawlings, and Spalding merged
with smaller, local or regional
companies to increase their presence in
markets throughout the country. Lowe &
Campbell, Horace Partridge, & Teman
King operated under the same catalog. Treman,
King & Co. finally closed in 1939, done
in by the Great Depression.
The Treman King Athletics Goods baseball bat features the company's
trademark Cayuga Indian head logo.
Because the dating is based on the
existence of the company name, Treman
King Athletics Goods Corp., starting in
1933, and closing in 1939, the bat was
more than likely produced by Wilson
Sporting Goods.
