Made of select ash timber, this
Hillerich & Bradsby Co. 40 T.S.
baseball bat, as advertised, is "an
exact duplicate of the model used by Tris Speaker in the 1912 World Series."
The bat features a "Photo Trade Mark
Transfer and Autograph" on the barrel.
One
of a line of decal bats issued by the
J.F. Hillerich & Son Co. in 1915, which
included; Ty Cobb, Hans Wagner, Frank
"Goodnight" Baker, Eddie Collins, Harry
Davis, and Joe Jackson.
The transitional Dash-Dot-Dash center brand on this bat features the
"Hillerich & Bradsby Co."
name, when the name was changed from
J.F. Hillerich & Son Co. in 1916. "Made
In U.S.A." would replaced Dash-Dot-Dash
in 1921, dating the bat to 1916-1920.
Catalogs issued after 1915 use stock
images listing the bat with the J.F. Hillerich
& Son Co. branding. The decals for these bats were
produced by Palm Fechteler & Co.
Established in 1856 Palm Fechteler &
Co. was a major supplier of elegant
decorations for horse-drawn carriages,
coaches, and buggies. Self proclaimed
"the largest decalcomanie manufacturing
organization in the world" the company
went on to make decals, e.g., for
commercial trucks, vehicle tag
stickers, and decals to brand your
product. Palm Fechteler produced decals
for the J. F. Hillerich & Son company
to use on its popular line of decal
bats during the period 1910 to 1916,
and beyond. Palm Fechteler & Co. also
went on to produce the decals for
Louisville Slugger's line of decal bats
issued around 1954.
