Zako's Sorting Goods was established
by Joseph C. Zacko in 1924, at
305-307 North Third Street,
Pottsville, Pennsylvania. Joe, known as
the "Fox" in both NFL and major league
baseball circles, was formerly a scout
with both the New York Yankees and
Boston Red Sox. Zacko was inducted into
the prestigious Pennsylvania Sports
Hall of Fame in
1971 for his countless
contributions to Schuylkill County's
sports scene.
He personally led the crusade to have the Pottsville Maroons officially
recognized as the 1925 NFL Champions.
The team was stripped of the title
following a suspension by the NFL for
playing an exhibition game against a
team of University of Notre Dame
All-Stars at Shibe Park in
Philadelphia. NFL Commissioner Joe Carr
ruled in favor of the Frankfort Yellow
Jackets protest that it was an invasion
of their "territorial rights."
Zacko's Sporting Goods Store had been the official outfitter for the
Maroons a member of the National
Football League from 1925 to 1928 when
the franchise was sold to a Boston
syndicate and later moved to
Washington, where it became the
Redskins.
The
"Zacko's Sporting Goods" center-brand
reads across the top: "The Sportsman's
Store Since '24." Known block letter
last name endorsement models include
this "Fire Toned" Robinson Style Model.
Baseball bats produced with block
letter last name endorsements, followed
by the words "Model," "Type," or
"Style," indicates that the manufacture
did not have permission to use the
players name. The "Robinson Style
Model" is most likely a Jackie Robinson
Model, playing off the players
popularity, loosely dating the bat to
the 1950s. Zacko's Sporting Goods
closed in 1973.
