In 1888, the Baseball Card
Company of 37 Great Jones street, NY,
issued a pack of 72 baseball playing
cards. Something entirely new in it's
day, the baseball cards could be used
to play many new games. You could play
baseball at home. The cards feature a
finely illustrated color portrait of a
National League ballplayer wearing his
club uniform. The City of the club is
at the top, and the players last name
at the bottom, below the fielding
position. The 2.5" x 3.5" baseball
cards have a blue-on-blue lathework
pattern on the back.
Designated WG1, by the American Card
Catalog, the cards were produced for
the eight existing National League
teams, with each club represented by
nine players at each position. Each
position (1-9) was assigned a unique
denomination, with the playing card
appearing in the upper right corner.
Catchers(1) were aces; pitchers(2) -
kings, short stops(3) - queens, first
baseman(4) - knaves(jacks), second
baseman(5) -Tens, third baseman(6) -
nines, Left Fielders(7) - Eight, Center
Fielders(8) - sevens, and Right
Fielders(9) - Sixes. There were no card
numbers 2 trough 5.
Initials representing the team City replaced the traditional suits;
Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades.
The Suits(letters) appear in the upper
left corner, followed by position
stacked above the number attributed to
that position. B=Boston, C=Chicago,
D=Detroit, I=Indianapolis, NY=New York,
P=Philadelphia, Pg=Pittsburgh, and
W=Washington.
