"Strip cards" are a type of
pre-World War II baseball card that
were typically distributed in long
strips and cut by retailers or
consumers. and They frequently given
away with purchases or sold alongside
other items like candy or cigarettes.
One of the many "strip card" sets of
the period, the W512 multi genre
set consists of 60 cards, each
approximately 1-3/8” by 2-1/4.” Originally printed in strips
and then hand-cut, card fronts feature
a crude color drawing of its subject
against a solid background. The W512
strip card set is believed to have been
printed over a three-year period from
1925-27. Those dates are basically
confirmed due to several variations in
the set. The set included ten baseball
players as well as a variety of other
athletes, actors and
actresses.
Everett Scott moved from the Yankees to the Senators midway through the
1925 season (then on to the White Sox
in 1926), providing strong indication
that the W512 set was initially issued
in early-to-mid 1925. The checklist
below lists both 1926 and 1927 printing
variations.
