On May 26, 1999, the United
States Postal Service issued the
Celebrate The Century: 1950s
commemorative stamp souvenir sheet in
Springfield, Maryland. Two of the
fifteen stamps had a baseball theme.
"World
Series Rivals," celebrating the New
York Yankees, Brooklyn Dodger battles
of the 1950s. From 1947 to 1956, the
two rivals would face-off in six World
Series, four of them played in the
1950s. The Dodgers only winning once in
1955.
The other stamp, "Shot Heard Round The World;"
celebrating the walk-off home run hit
by New York Giants outfielder Bobby
Thomson off Brooklyn Dodgers pitcher
Ralph Branca at the Polo Grounds on
October 3, 1951, to win the National
League pennant.
Designed by Howard Paine, and illustrated by Dean Ellis the "Shot
Heard Round The World" 33¢ postage
stamp depicts the ball hit by Bobby
Thompson leaving yard at the New York
Giants Polo Grounds.
The backprint on the stamp reads: "The 1951
National League pennant race was
decided in a best-of-three games
playoff. The New York Giants beat the
Brooklyn Dodgers when, in the ninth
inning of the third game, Bobby Thomson
hit a three-run homer. Celebrate The
Century - 1950s"
The Fleetwood silk First day cover pictured above
depicts a group of five men listening
to the Dodger-Giant playoff game on the
radio. n the wall behind the radio is a
picture of; hitter Bobby Thompson,
uniform number 23, and catcher Rube
walker, uniform number 10, assumingly
the moment Thompson hit the three-run
home run. The back of the Fleetwood FDC
features a brief history of the 1951
pennant race, and the three-game
playoffs.
The back also features a "Fleetwood
1929-1999 First Name In First Day
Covers" identifier. Fleetwood, in the
business since 1929, is the leading
First Day Cover producer, making covers
continuously since 1941. Fleetwood is
the only FDC company that makes a cover
for every U.S. postage stamp issued.
