As America
approached the end of the 20th century,
the USPS sought a way to honor the wide
variety of events that had taken place.
From 1998 to 2000, the US Post Office
issued the Celebrate The Century series
of postage stamps. Honoring each decade
with collectible 15-stamp panes from
the 1900s through the 1990s. Seven
baseball themed stamps were represented
out of the 150.
On May 2, 2000, the United
States Postal Service issued the

Escondido, CA. The last baseball
themed postage stamps appears in this
decade celebrating all the baseball
records set in the decade.

Jr. smashed a legendary endurance
record. Playing in his 3,131
consecutive game on September 6, he
broke the mark set 56 years ealier by
Lou Gehrig. In 1998 Roger Maris'
37-year old record of 61 home runs in a
season fell. Incredibly, it was broken
twice, by Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa.
On September 7th McGwire tied Maris,
and hit his 62nd home run the next day.
Just 5 days later Sammy Sosa Tied and
past Maris.
Finishing the season with 70 home runs, Mark McGwire became the first
player to hit 50 or more home runs in
four consecutive seasons in 1999. Barry
Bonds was the first player with both
400 homers and 400 steals in his
career' The "Team of the '90s" was the
New York Yankees. Ending the decade
with their second straight World Series
victory, they established a new record
of 36 pennants and 25 World
Championships.
The backprint on the stamp reads: "The pursuit of three important and
long-standing records thrilled Major
League Baseball fans. Career
strikeouts, connective games played,
and home runs in a single season. Celebrate The
Century - 1990s"
