Given the catalog designation H
804-38, these two baseball themed, 19th
century trade cards are part of a four
card set with the tagline "An Accurate
Barometer." Pictured above; "No Base
Ball for a week," pictured below,
"Prospect of a good afternoon for Base
Ball," and the other two with
non-baseball illustrations: "Cold and clear no
let up," and Hot, with prospect of
being hotter. Advertising trade cards were
produced for merchants to promote their
business to clients and potential
customers, as a kind of modern day
business card.
Trade cards normally use both sides as the one pictured above. One side
featuring the color illustration with
the advertiser "B. & E. Goodman The
Clothiers." at the top, and their
location at the bottom. The reverse
side features a full card ad. Some
cards would feature the complete ad on
the same side with the illustration,
and a blank back. Others like the
"Prospect of a good afternoon for Base
Ball," card pictured below, had all the
advertiser's information and ad
completely on the back.
