This set of six cards copyrighted in
1878 by the Forbes Company of Boston
were used to produced advertising trade
cards for merchants to use as
promotional items. The cards were sold
by agents across the county that would
print the advertisement on stock cards
provided by the Forbes co. that
featured colorfully illustrated
baseball themed lithographs.
Established in 1862 the Forbes
Lithograph Company became a leader in
multicolored packing and advertising
materials. During World War I, it's
artists designed patriotic recruiting
posters, and in the 1940's produced
maps of Europe used for the military.
The set is of special significance as it is among the earliest of all
baseball related card sets. Each of the
trade cards features the title at the
top in red or black ink as follows: A
Fly, Foul, Home Run, Judgment, Muff,
and Twist. The merchants advertisement
is printed at the bottom, with "Forbes
of Boston - Copyright 1879" below. Some are
found with the advertisement at the
top. The 3" x 4 3/4" blank back cards
were printed on thin card stock.
