The Bat Day SGA - The King Of Stadium Give Aways |
|
|
|
|
|
Bat Day. The greatest game a kid under the age of 14 could attend. It
could be named a holiday. A notch on the list below Christmas, or Birthday.
Many of us have great memories receiving one of these prized possessions. As
adults the feel of one of these bats in our hands brings us back in time. The
correct dating of these bats could help us recapture a part of our youth. |

The New york Yankees might be the only team that has traditional held The
Bat Day Promotion every year since 1965.
The Yankees Bat Day
Dating Guide can be used to help date your bat issued by anther team.
This would not be an exact science as some teams used different barrel
brandings but in some cases, it can put you within a year or two, then combined
with other methods, the bat can be attributed to a specific year.
Scorecards or and pocket schedules that list special promotions will help,
after you figured out the approximate era. This could also rule out years the
team did not have a Bat Day Promotion. After 1974 the Promotion schedules also
list sponsors. This will also help narrow down
the years for bats that have a sponsor
logo.
The player endorsement on the bats made in earlier years could also help date
bats with the same barrel branding, by checking the years they played for the
team. Bob Oliver only played one year for the Yankees making it easy to date
his Bat Day baseball bat to1975. Bats of other players with the same branding
could attribute the bat to the same year. Barrel Branding variations could
differ with the Player or team name in lowercase block letters or script. With
or without "Approved Little League" and the order they appear on the barrel.
Teams also used different bat manufactures from year to year, but the
branding used by the bat manufacture could also help in dating. The "PRO"
designation was used for Bat Day Bats made by Hillerich & Bradsby co.,
Louisville Slugger. The "BNB" designation was used for Adirondack bats. Both
manufactures sometimes changed center brands and by identifying the
difference
could also help date the bat.
The Hillerich & Bradsby co. used the "H&B" logo center brand in 1965 for
Yankee Bat Day bats, before changing to the Hillerich & Bradsby co., center
brand in 1966. They also use the "H&B" center brand in the 1980s for some teams
but there are distinct difference for dating. Exclusive to 1968 & 1969 the bat
day bats were "MADE IN CANADA" all other years were made in the U.S.A. In 1980 the Hillerich & Bradsby co. changed the logo on all their bats when they start
to use the "Louisville Slugger" logo.
After the merger with Rawlings, Adirondack changes their center brand to
the Rawlings/Adirondack Pro-Ring bats, but hey still use the BNB" designation.
These bats can be dated exclusively to 1983-1986. After this era Louisville
slugger dominates as the Bat Day bat manufacture and the different sponsors
used by the team becomes a major resource for dating. Some years that have the
same sponsor for multiple years, in some cases, can be differentiated by
variations in the companies logo.
From 1976-1978 Burger King used two different logos. One with "Have it Your Way" below
the burger logo. Then you have Coke,
Coca-Cola, and Coca-Cola Classic, logos. The promotion schedule will only
list the sponsor not the different logos used so further research would be
needed to separate the years. It will however narrow down what years the
sponsor was used. In most cases teams would use different sponsors than other
teams. They also might use a local sponsor so a comparison of sponsors used by
other teams can not be used to date the bat. You have to check the schedule.

Again, most of the information explained above can be used to help date your
bat to a an era or within a year or two. Further research might be needed to
narrow it down to a specific year. If you have any questions or need help in
dating your "Bat Day" SGA baseball bat send me pictures and any information to

and I could also catalog the information on the website for other collectors. |
