Patented in 1891, this mask was
part of the first line of catchers
masks to appear in the A.J. Reach
catalog. Sold throughout the 1890s to
the 1900s, this Loop & Clip constructed
black enameled (to cut down on glare)
steel frame catchers mask featured 4
side pads tied with wire around the
perimeter of the mask. The pads were
made of imported dogskin which is
impervious to perspiration, and stuffed
with imported goat hair. The leather
chin guard featured the A.J Reach
trademark logo.
Missing is the leather Visor that was mounted to the upper part of the
frame-work adapted to bear upon the
forehead, which acts both as a screen
to keep the glare of light from the
eyes and as a cushion to prevent injury
to the forehead under the impact of a
blow from a ball. Also missing on
the lower end of the
head-cushion, are flexible elastic
blinkers on each side formed of rubber
and secured by stitching.
The head strap on this model reads "UNDER PATENT, JUNE 30TH 1891" The
object of the patent filled by Leo J.F.
Rooney, was to prevent the interference
of sunshine or the glare of an electric
light, where that is the source of
illumination, with the operation of the
player, to render the mask readily
adjustable to any shape of head, and to
render it easily applied to or
withdrawn from the head.
