The Rawlings OV-62 Open Vision
catchers mask was listed in the 1952
catalog for $7.25. Recommended by
Rawlings for Little League play, the
mask features; "Open Vision," welded
wire face conforming frame, designed to
allow maximum vision. "Open vision"
masks are the descendants of the
"Wide-Sight" (AKA Wide-Vision) frame
construction introduced by
Reach-Spalding in 1912, which
eventually
phased out the "Goggle-Eye" AKA
Spiderman masks.
The 1952-1954 OV-62 models have face pads attached to the frame with leather pad-flaps and lacing.
Some models were endorsed by Stan
Lopata, Al "Red" Evans, Bruce Edwards,
and Dick Bertell. By 1955 the face pads for the OV-62
catchers mask were attached to the
frame using snaps. One of the first
catchers mask in the market to use this
method. The 1955 model also has a 3
piece face pad, unlike the full wrap
around pad used on the earlier models.
