The Celluloid Umpire indicator,
catalog No. 0, was intended for the use of baseball
umpires and scorers to keep tally of
the number of balls and strikes that
may be called. The indicator could be
operated by the thumb and forefinger
while held in the palm of the hand. The
design of this umpire indicator was
first issued in 1887, replacing the
previous "Automatic Umpire Indicator"
design from the year before. In 1887
the number of strikes for an out was
changed to four. The only year in which
it took four strikes for a strike-out. In
1887 the number of balls for walk was
changed to five. It was seven the year
before in 1886.
Since it took five balls for a walk
in 1887, and 4 Strikes for a strike
out, these indicators can be attributed
to 1887. It was promptly changed back
to three strikes the following
season, and four balls in 1889.
The indicators cost .75 cents in 1887,
.50 cents in 1888.
The 1887 Umpire indicators features "PAT'D OCT. 28 1886" on the bottom
right corner of the indicator side,
which is sometimes found worn away from
age. The
opposite side has a single border
Spalding baseball logo. By 1889 the 4
balls & 3 strike indicators have a
double border Spalding baseball logo,
and on the indicator side two patent
dates; "PAT'D MAY 28 1878" on the
bottom left corner, and "PAT'D
OCT. 12 1886" on the bottom right
corner. The Spalding Official Base Ball
Guides, Use the word "Patent" in their
ads up to 1894. It is my belief that
from 1895 to 1935 the Patent date was
no longer used on the indicators.
The 4 balls & 3 strikes indicator,
without the patent date sell for about
$50.-$75. in VG-EX condition. The 4
balls and 3 strike indicators with the
two patent dates have an estimated
value of about $200.-$300. in VG-EX
condition. The 1887, 5 balls and 4
strikes indicator has an estimated
value of about $650.-$800. in VG-EX
condition. With the box add
$500.-$1,000.
