The Spalding No. 1 League Catchers
mask is made of one solid piece of
light weight, special composition
metal. The mask is lighter than the
average professional style of wire mesh
frame construction. The two rigid 5/8
inch round bars permits clear vision,
without removing the mask from the head
when catching fly balls. Fitted with
full length face padding laced to the
frame, it can be removed or adjusted as
may be required.
A patent,
No. 1449183, was filed by umpire
James E. Johnstone in 1921 for a
one-piece aluminum casting catchers
mask with horizontal crossbars instead
of soldered mesh. The patent was
approved on March 20, 1923, as stamped
into the metal on the right side of the
mask. The left side has Johnstone
stamped into it. The Spalding No. 1
League catchers mask was produced into
the early 1940s, (pre-war) with no
change to the design. The model number
was changed to 601 in 1940.
The metal frame originally had a black finish to prevent glare, but as
with most
masks that surface in the hobby of this
model,
has worn
away. The "Johnston" frame was used by
other manufactures, most likely coming
from the same factory, separated only
by the padding used.
