"Batting Averages Skyrocket With Yogi
Berra's Original Bat-O-Glove." Endorsed
by Yogi Berra this batting glove was
distributed by Cambridge Sporting Goods
Corp. some time around the mid to late
1960's. Established in 1943 Cambridge
was a sporting Goods wholesale
distributor with warehouses located
across the country including North
Bergen NJ, Muncie Indiana, and Los
Angeles California. One of two
executive offices located at 625
Broadway New York
City, N.Y. 10012. Their catalog
included a full line of sporting goods
made by the major manufactures, and a
Cambridge line manufactured and
privately branded for them by other
companies.
In the early 1960's the company imported baseball gloves from Japan. In
1961 Cambridge, along with, A.J.
Hollander & co., and the Olympic
sporting Goods Co. were prosecuted by
the FTC because the gloves they were
importing from Japan had the names of
ballplayers that did not legally give
endorsements to use their names.
The players named were; Tony Kubek, Al
Kaline, Whitey Ford, Early Wynn, Duke
Snider, Bill Skowron, and Jim Bunning.
The case was settled in 1962,
after the three companies agreed to
stop using the names of prominent major
league stars on their products.
The Yogi Berra's Original Bat-O-Glove was distributed after 1963, and most
likely officially licensed to use
Berra's name. The batting glove came in
a poly-wrapped backing card with
a black & white picture of Yogi Berra
in a Yankee Uniform using the batting
glove, which is magnified. The card
boasts; "*Eliminates Blisters, *Reduces
Hand Soreness, *Eliminates Bat
Throwing, *Improves Bat Control." The
Zip-Code, and the lack of the MLB
officially license logo loosely dates
the glove to 1963-1968.
