The Philadelphia Athletics defeated the
New York Giants four games to two in
the 1911 World Series. On December 12,
Connie Mack hosted a celebratory dinner
at the Hotel Astor to the Sports
writers Association of America. As each of the estimated 200
guests entered the dinning room, they
were presented with this commemorative
1911 World Series figural white
elephant, and a large box that
contained a souvenir of a miniature
baseball, glove, bat and mask neatly
mounted.
The elephant mounted on the base measures
approximately 2.5" x 3.5" x 4" and depicts a
small baseball diamond on the top.
Each side on
the base is engraved. The front
reads, "Athletics, Champions of the
World 1911" the next panel to the right
reads, "American Base Ball Club of
Philadelphia" the back end to the
right, "Dinner, Hotel Astor New York,
December 12, 1911" and to the next
panel to the right reads, "Baseball
Writers Association of America." The
fragile trunk, tusks and tail on this
rare figural are often found broken,
and with chipped paint.
