In conjunction with Major League
Baseball and The Sporting News, the
Danbury Mint issued "The Baseball Chess
Set," from 1997 to 2000. The set of
hand painted solid metal chess pieces
ranging from 2" to 3" tall
depict the
greatest legends in the game. The
lineup for the Black and Silver
National League team pieces included;
King - Henry Aaron, Queen - National
League badge logo, Bishops - Willie
Mays and Stan Musial, Knights - Roy
Campanella and Carl Hubbell, Rooks -
Rogers Hornsby and Jackie Robinson.
The American League Red & Gold pieces; King - Babe Ruth, Queen - American
League Bald Eagle logo, Bishops - Ty
Cobb and Ted Williams, Knights -
Yogi Berra and Walter Johnson, Rooks -
Jimmie Foxx and Lou Gehrig.
The tripod bats & equipment Pawns represent the 16 original Major League
teams. The National League:
Boston/Milwaukee Braves, St Louis
Cardinals, Chicago Cubs, Brooklyn
Dodgers, New York/San Francisco Giants,
Philadelphia Phillies, Pittsburgh
Pirates and Cincinnati Reds. The
American League Pawns: Philadelphia
Athletics, St Louis Browns, Cleveland
Indians, Boston Red Sox, Washington
Senators, Detroit Tigers, Chicago White
Sox and New York Yankees.
Each piece cost $19.95, issued in pairs every other month, and was
accompanied with a
baseball card. Team
cards had facts about the franchise on
the back, Player cards with stats. You
received the 17" x 17" x 2.25"
handcrafted wooded board that housed
the pieces, at no extra cost.
