In 1941, Pacific Radio
Corporation produced these
Imperial-brand Trophy Official League
Baseball Radios. They were distributed
by Paramount Supplies of Chicago. The radio
casing is designed as a baseball
out of
heavy
molded cardboard with
a printed paper
covering, with a Plastic knob on each
side; three
wire covered speakers, and a metal
"Trophy" die-cut name plate on top.
The base is metal and plastic.
The ball has
simulated stitching and the text reads "No.
AA, Selected Quality, Genuine
Horsehide, Cushion Cork Center, Official
League Ball." A Trophy Bowling
Ball Novelty Radio was also produced.
The Trophy Official League
Baseball Radio was part
of a 1941 Economy Stores Baseball Radio
Contest featuring Shurefine beverages
and Gold Medal Wheaties. The first 10
persons saving the largest amount of
box tops, and beverage caps, received a
Trophy Baseball Radio. The next 15
persons saving the greatest amount of
box tops and beverage caps received a
Hutch Vince DiMaggio Fielders Glove.
The next 15 persons saving the greatest
amount of box tops and beverage caps
received a
Bob Feller Baseball Bat.
The contest was advertised in Pennsylvanian newspapers only. The number of
prizes varied depending on the area
your Economy Store was located, and
some offered a Joe DiMaggio Glove
instead of one endorsed by Vince. Gold
Medal had a similar offer in Vermont,
for the three prizes, free to the
persons that brought in the most
Wheaties, Kix, Bisquick and Softasilk
box tops to the Gold Medal display.
Wheaties in Illinois, offered the Bob
Feller Bat by sending in a box top and
.25¢ which was advertised by a local
grocery store.
The Trophy Official League Baseball was also made available in the retail
market. Pay Less Drug Store in
California Sold the radio for $13.95.
Rex Radio of Ohio sold it for $17.95.
Bonds Food Market in California sold
the radio for $8.45 plus a Wheaties box
top.
