These Baseball team Emblem patch jackets
were a staple for young boys growing up
in the 1950's and 1960's. They were big
in the 1970's as well, but were
slowly phased out of style when the MLB
licensed team jacket hit the market.
The Jackets were a big seller for
5 & 10 stores, Woolworths, dime, and
discount stores. The team patch jackets
were also tagged with the Sears brand
and sold in their stores. This jacket was made by Lollytogs
LTD, a manufacture of children's
apparel founded in 1958, but there were
a large number on manufactures that
made them including; Playwear, Pickwick,
Bradlino, and Best
& Co.
For the most part the jackets can be dated by the team patches. For
example a jacket with the Redlegs patch
could be dated to the 1950's, Angels,
Astros, or Mets to the 1960's if
missing the MLB logo tagging. The
Jackets made in the 1970's or later
would have the MLB logo on or with the
tagging. The simple designed patches on
the early, '50's & '60's jackets seem
to have been made by one company, that
most of the jacket manufactures ordered
from. The patches made in the 1970's
and later became more sophisticated. Just to note: The Redlegs
(1953-1958) patches did make it into
the 1960's, more than likely overstock
from earlier manufacturing.
In general the baseball team patch jackets sell for about $15.-$30., mostly
dictated by size, not age. The
particular team patches sewn onto the
jacket will also effect the demand.
Most collectors buy them to regain the
jacket they had from the decade they
grew up in. The demand is the same for
all eras. The jacket pictured above is
a toddler size and can be easily had
for under $10.-$15. The Jackets also
came in slightly different styles, Red
or blue, and number of patches, front
or and back. My Childhood jacket had
patches down the sleeves, and I wore it
proudly.
