During the 1950s, noted illustrator
William Medcalf produced a series of
baseball related artworks for the
advertising firm of Brown & Bigelow.
The artwork was featured on a number of
branded promotional merchandise that
included, Baseball schedules,
Playing cards,
and calendars. Six of Baseballs biggest
stars were depicted in Medcalf's art at
the top of the calendar which
included; Ty Cobb titled "THAT'S IT," Honus Wagner
titled "a GREAT Day," and
Connie Mack "titled "PLAY TO WIN." All
three appeared as they did in
the early 1950's. Babe Ruth titled
"C'MON KID," Lou
Gehrig titled "ATTA BOY," and John McGraw
titled "KEEP GOING," depicted as spiritual
images.
The bottom features the calendar pad.
In a space between the artwork, and the calendar
pad, specialty advertising was printed
to promote the business for the client.
The calendars were then given as gifts
to customers. The calendars could be
ordered in different sizes, including, 11" x 25,"
and 16" x 33." Similar
baseball theme calendars were issued in
the late 1950's through to the 1960,
featuring ballplayers such as Joe
DiMaggio, Mel Ott, Jimmie Foxx, Mickey
Cochrane, Christy Mathewson, Rogers
Hornsby and Dizzy Dean.
