Following his historic
record
breaking 61 home run, MVP season in 1961, Roger
Maris presented specially produced
cigarette lighters of a different design to each
of his teammates. This Hadson cigarette
lighter is the one given to Mickey
Mantle. One side of the lighter
features the New York Yankees top hat
logo, and the other side has "MICKEY
MANTLE" in block lettering. The lighter
with it's original box comes from the
estate of Mickey Mantle's
Mother-In-Law, Reba Johnson of Picher
OK.
Sal Durante, the 19 year old fan that caught Roger Maris' 61st home run,
offered Maris the ball. Maris said,
‘No, you keep it, make yourself some
money.’” Sometime afterwards, Durante
sold the ball for $5,000. and Maris got
the ball as gift. In appreciation Maris
gave Durante his personal “1961 New
York Yankees World Series Champions”
cigarette lighter, that also featured
his Roger Maris #9, Home Run King 61
HR, MVP season engraving. This could
have given Maris the idea of presenting
his teammates each with a lighter.
Value is based on past auctions and sales. Because this is a
"One-of-A-Kind" item with no sales
history, value is estimated on selling
prices of similar presentation items,
for Mantle and other players. The value
will vary based on the quality and strength of the
provenance that accompanies the
Lighter.
