This Mickey Mantle's Gourmet
Dinner menu is from Mickey Mantle's
Second annual Ballplayer's Party held
at Mantle's Holiday Inn hotel in
Joplin, MO, on February 3, 1962. Mickey
Mantle's Holiday Inn officially opened
on October 23, 1957, in Joplin,
Missouri by Mickey Mantle and business
partner Harold Youngman. The 8" x 11"
bi-fold menu is printed on heavy
cream-colored stock, with maroon ink.
On the front is an illustration of a
batter swinging from the right side,
and "Mickey Mantle's, Gourmet Dinner"
printed above, with an abstract number
7 shaped background. The back of the
menu has a guest list with attendees
from a number of ball clubs, listed to
the right of each name.
Friends, ballplayers and dignitaries include; Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Youngman,
Mickey's business partner listed as
N.Y. Yankees Auxiliary, Mr. and Mrs.
Roger Maris, Hank Bauer, Clete Boyer,
Whitey Herzog, Johnny Sain,
Bill Verdon, Dick Williams, and Jack
White, New York Yankees (Scouting
Director) The only one going stag.
The inside of the bi-fold menu on the left page includes the
itinerary for the evening. Cocktails in
the "Dugout" between 7:00-7:45, and
Dinner was served at 8:00 in the
"Oriental Room." Then back to the
"Dugout" for the floor show, with
entertainment by the vocal group "Somethin'
Smith and the Redheads." The
right page features the menu, "Le Menu"
as it's written in French. Top left
reads: "Souper, Dîner de Cérémonial, de
Sociéte du Vin et Repàs" (Dinner, Diner
of Ceremonial, Society of Wine and
Meals) The Top right Reads: "47
couverts à 20 hrs" Pardon my French (47
people at 20 hrs) "Mickey Mantle's
Gourmet Dinner Le Menu" is all in
French. On the left is the wine list
served with each dish, on the right.
You just have to wonder if anyone at
the dinner knew what was going to be
served until it was in front of them.
