In 1986 a Canadian firm bought the
Clem's restaurant lease on Marquesas
Way then converted the restaurant to
Tommy Lasorda's Ribs and Pasta
restaurant. The Lasorda restaurant was
owned and operated by Lasorda's Ribs
and Pasta, Inc., a wholly owned
subsidiary of Champs Food Systems,
Winnipeg, Manitoba. The restaurant
opened in 1987 in Marina del Rey, South
Pasadena, and Lakewood California.
In 1989 the Los Angeles Dodgers' manager Tommy Lasorda sued a pest control
company for $500,000, alleging it
failed to rid his South Pasadena
restaurant of rodents and bugs. As a
result, authorities closed Tommy
Lasorda's Ribs and Pasta for five days
in October, a few weeks after his
baseball team won the 1988 World
Series. The closure and bad
publicity hurt the business. Lasorda contended that American
City Pest Control Co. had agreed to
eradicate the infestation two months
earlier.
Health officials ordered Lasorda's Ribs and Pasta closed from Oct. 26-31
for "one of the worst rat infestations"
the health inspector had ever seen. The
restaurant reopened after the health
department determined that the problems
had been satisfactorily addressed. By
early 1990, because of rodent
infestation, the South Pasadena and Marina del Rey
locations were closed, and the
Lakewood restaurant which had a different menu, closed soon after.
For decades, placemats were used by restaurants to keep their patrons
entertained, educated, and amused while
they were waiting for their meals to be
served. They were meant to be used once
and discarded, making most a rare
commodity. Whether made for a famous
restaurant with a baseball theme, or a
small diner, they are interesting,
inexpensive and fun to collect.
