These Crouse-Hinds type R, single face
traffic signal lights were repurposed and
turned into Yankee Stadium souvenirs by
changing the lens and rewired for use
in the home or office. They
were then sold
in the surrounding area of Yankee
stadium during the late 1970's to the
1980's. There are a
large variety of lenses used for these
souvenir display lights that includes;
New York Yankees, Yankee Stadium,
Yankee Tickets, Tickets-Park, "A One of
a Kind" Mickey Mantle Memorial Park (a
Park that doesn't exist), To Bleachers,
to Upper Deck, and there are also NY Giants,
Mets and Jets that were sold in the
Shea Stadium area.
These Traffic lights
were never used to direct Yankee
Stadium Traffic or point fans to the
Ticket Window, upper deck or Bleachers. They
are just fantasy "Man Cave" display
pieces.
Crouse-Hinds was one of the original
traffic signal pioneers. Their
distinctive art deco signals that
appeared from the 30s until 1959 were
legendary and quite sought after by
collectors. The Traffic signals used to
make the Yankee Stadium souvenirs are from
about the
1960's-1970s. Some newer signal lights
were used and repurposed to be sold in
the 1990s and later.
The signal light pictured measures
about 13" x 13" x 8" and
weighs approximately 11.2 lbs. They
generally sell in the $50.-$150. price
range, as fantasy
pieces for display. However there are an alarming
number of these traffic signals that
have sold and are currently being
sold in the $1,000.+ price range with
asking prices as high as $5,000. They
are being sold as original, and
authentic, as being used at Yankee
Stadium. This is just not true. They
were never use for anything other than
conventional signal lights with
NO YANKEE STADIUM LENS.
Buyer beware!
Here are some
False
descriptions from ebay auctions.
- "An ORIGINAL New York City traffic
street light sign from Yankee Stadium
that served traffic and pedestrians in
the Bronx, NY heading to the
"House that Ruth Built". This was
obtained from our consignor directly
from a retired employee of the New York
State Department of
Transportation and were hung in the
neighborhoods of the Yankee Stadium
exit just off the Major Deegan
Expressway."
- "This is a great looking and all original, authentic hanging light
fixture
directional sign that came from the old
Yankee Stadium"
- "NEW YORK YANKEES TRAFFIC LIGHTS WERE
TAKEN FROM THE OLD YANKEE STADIUM AFTER
BEING DISPLAYED THERE FOR YEARS
EXTREMELY RARE"
- "WOW--own a piece of History---this
was removed by a worker when the place
was taken down. It was placed out side
directing people to the stadium etc"
- "This is a original street light from
old Yankees stadium that was torn
down in 1973 and is extremely rare"
These lights are large and do Make a great display piece for $100-$200.,
with patience you could find them for
less but they are NOT authentic and not
worth the big money that they are selling
for in misleading auctions.
