Pennants
that commemorate special events, or
player milestone are highly sought
after. Photo pennants are also at the
top as being a fan, and collectors
favorite. This player photo pennant
celebrating Hank Aaron's Record breaker
has all three features.
At the Start of the 1974 season Hank
Aaron needed just two home runs to
break Babe Ruth's all time home run
record of 714. In anticipation the
Atlanta Braves produced these "Hank
Aaron All Time Home Run Champion, 715"
souvenir photo pennants. Four games
into the 1974 season, on April 8, Aaron
broke the most sacred record in all of
sports, and hit 715. The photo pennants
ready in wait, hit the souvenir stands.
There are also other variations of
this Atlanta Braves pennant. One a
photo pennant, but without the year,
and number of home runs, which must have been sold later in the year.
There was also a "715, 1974" pennant
made without the photo, using a printed
image of the new home run king. After
being traded to Milwaukee the following
year in 1975, the Brewers issued their
own version of the "Hank Aaron Home Run
Champion" pennant, without a year or
home run total. All four pennants have
the same estimated value of about
$20.-$30., EX-NM.
Common flaws with pennants are missing ties, pin holes, frying, creases,
and "crackling" on the printing.
Sometimes people will trim down a
pennant to rid it of the frying or
other flaws like a flat tip (point)
Caused by being pinned up and ripped
off. Any of these flaws will degrade
the pennant significantly.
Doctored pennants A term used to describe a pennant that has been altered
to cover up a flaw, is a practice that
is frowned upon among the collecting
community, and could sell for less than
a pennant with the flaws it was meant
to cover up. In general full size
pennants measure 12"x30"
