James A. Hartzell was a 45 year
veteran cartoonist for the Baltimore
Sun newspaper from 1934-1979. Hartzell drew his
first cartoon oriole for the franchise
owners as the Major League team arrived
in Baltimore in 1954. The Oriole was
also the model for Major League
baseball's first mascot, Mr. Oriole.
Hartzell's Oriole and
successors that evolved there after, were reproduced
on souvenirs, yearbooks, admission tickets, and
used on uniform caps.
The ink on tracing paper drawings, were mounted on illustration board,
photostated, and set up for
publication. The Reddish yellow tones
in the drawing would come out grey in
the photostat.
The Casey Stengel-Mickey Mantle, "Vote Here," with the caption "That Guy
has been In There A Long Time" cartoon
was drawn to accompany a story about
the Yankees firing or "retiring"
70-year-old Casey Stengel. In a 1960,
Associated Press annual year-end poll,
"Top Oddity in Sports," 144 sports
writers and sportscasters voted the
firing of Stengel second, 24 of 144.
The mid-season trade of Cleveland's
manager Joe Gordon for Detroit's
manager Jimmy Dykes was rated number
one, 52 of 144.
The Ralph Houk-Casey Stengel "Our New Manager" drawing was for the Yankees
introducing their new manager in 1961.
