Made by Big League Books a division
of Jay Publishing, the 1966 team-issued
picture pack photos were sold through
ballpark concession stands in sets of
twelve. The 5" x 7" black-and-white
player portrait or posed action photos,
were issued by Jay Publishing in
the same format, though the mail from
1958-1965, and can be identified by the
players name followed by the city, and
team nickname. For example: "MICKEY
MANTLE New York Yankees" The
Team Issue
sets as featured on this page have the
players name followed by the team
nickname. For Example: "MICKEY MANTLE
Yankees"
The 1966 team issued 12 Player/Manager photo set was sold in a white
windowed envelope that reads "New York
Yankees, PICTURE PACK, 12 STAR PLAYERS"
A Big League Books, mail in order form
was also included to order other team
picture packs, and yearbooks which were
Jay Publishing Big
Book Editions.
The player composition of the 12 photos for the team-issued
picture packs purchased at the
beginning of the season might be
significantly different from that of a
set bought at the end of the year.
Player pictures were sometimes added or
removed to reflect
trades, retirements or other roster
changes. For example the 1966 Yankees set
starts off with Manager
Johnny Keane, who was
replaced by Manager Ralph Houk 20 games
into the season. Manager Ralph Houk is
part of the sets sold later in the
season
The 1966 checklist features 15 player photos that were used throughout the year.
Some player photos were used for
multiple years making it difficult to
pin down a specific year by just
identifying a photo. A set can be identified by
using the checklist below, and
identifying the player photo used in
the 1966 set.
