Referred to by collectors as
PD1 "position pins," this baseball
advertising pinback button
set was issued in several variations. The
face of the buttons feature
illustrations of players in various
positions of play, with matching
caption, set against white,
gold, or with a detailed background.
Position and captions include: Batsman, Captain, Catcher, Center
Field, First Base, Left Field, Pitcher, Right
Field, Second Base, Shortstop, Third
Base, and Umpire. Variations include
both red and blue player
uniforms.
The buttons were were produced by
Whitehead & Hoag
Co. for merchants
to promote their business to clients
and potential customers. Some pins were
made with advertisements on both front
and back, or just the same side with
the illustration, and others have a
paper advertisements only
on the back. The pins are also found with a
paper
Whitehead & Hoag
Co. back that have
an 1896 copyright, but the pins are
thought to be issued through the early
1900's.
Most of the advertisements feature newspapers such as; Dispatch & Pioneer
Press, The Pittsburgh
Times, and various other companies include, Mancels & Schnidts Bread, H.B.
Windrath of Buffalo, NY, Harrisburg Athletic
Club, Reis Drugs, Spartana Drink ad
Culvert Bros. Sporting Goods. Button ad
slogans include; "I
am at the bat for the Dispatch &
Pioneer Press" or "Good ball
players eat Toasted Cream of Rye
Flakes."
