This 25 pin baseball players set, was
part of a 500 button premium given away
by General Gum Incorporated. A free
button was given away with the purchase
of General Gum's, 1 cent button Gum. The
themes used on the 500 buttons included; Presidents,
Ball Players, Movie Stars, Generals,
Solders, Animals, Indians, scouts,
Birds, and the Worlds Fair. The blue-line drawings
depicting baseball
player portraits, came with tinted
backgrounds ranging from Yellow,
gray and blue tones.
The pins were originally cataloged as 1930 Cracker Jack
pins. The pins have been recently
re-dated to 1933, but there is
absolutely no evidence that the pins
were ever a Cracker Jack Prize. Even if
you could get past that a pin would be
placed in a box of candy, that the hand
of a child would be digging around in,
to claim their 'toy,' there's the
Button Gum wrappers that recently
surfaced that clearly picture these
pins. This should be a good indication
that the early guides got it wrong, or
at least the dating. It still can't be
ruled out that the pins also came in
box of Cracker Jack. There's just no
way to prove it.
The year of issue was originally estimated to 1930, based on player-team
affiliations. This method actually
proves that the 1930 dating is not accurate. First, Dizzy Dean
played his first and only game in 1930.
It is extremely doubtful that he would
have been included in a 1930 set. It was
also Vernon Gomez' first year. George
Grantham who was playing for Pittsburgh
from 1925-1931 is sporting a Cincinnati
(1932-1933) "C" on his cap. Carl
Reynolds with his "W" Washington cap,
was with the White Sox from 1927-1931.
There's more but lets move on. The
kicker is, General Gum of Chicago, did
not incorporate until 1932. Using the
player affiliations, the pins can be
attributed to being manufactured in
1932, and issued in 1933.
The unnumbered pins are listed in the checklist below in alphabetical
order.
