NOTES:

This Perfection Cigarettes "OH, YOU GIANTS" pinback button, was given away free as a premium with a pack of cigarettes. The Whitehead & Hoag Co. produced pins from about 1910 through to the 1930's that featured popular conversational phrases of the day. The pinback buttons were also made for other tobacco companies that included; The Favorite, Hassan, Tokio, Clix, Obak, Picayune, Chesterfield cigarettes, and Red Lion chewing tobacco.

The opened back button has a paper insert advertising Perfection cigarettes. The paper reads "THE PERFECTION CIGARETTES, Factory No. 42, 4th District. NC, The WHITEHEAD & HOAG Co., NEWARK N.J., PATENTED JULY 21, 1896." The Whitehead & Hoag Co. acquired three major patents prior to entering into button manufacturing in 1896.

"Oh, You....." was a common phrase of the day used in the sports section of newspapers, particularly starting, and after the 1908 season. Whitehead & Hoag issued buttons that read; "Oh! You Cubs," "Oh, you Giants," and "Oh you Pirates." All three teams that were involved in the most exciting and dramatic pennant race in baseball history. The Cubs, Giants, and Pirates battled throughout the 1908 season, which ended with the three teams separated by only one game in the standings.

The infamous "Merkle's Boner;" the notorious base-running mistake committed by rookie Fred Merkle of the New York Giants in a game against the Chicago Cubs on September 23, 1908, led to a one game play-off, which enabled the Cubs to win the National League pennant.

There was also a close pennant race in the American League that same year between the Tigers, Indians, and White Sox. The season ending with the three teams separated by only a game and a half in the standings. An "Oh, You Indians" button was also produced, so Whitehead & Hoag might have also made "Oh, you Tigers," and "Oh, You White Sox" buttons, but they have yet to surface in the hobby. An "Oh, You Phillies" button has also surfaced.
