Major
1st Events In a Century Of Baseball
portrayed by a series of commemorative
poster stamps booklet, was issued by Forest Park Baseball Museum
Inc. Organized
in 1934 by Emery Parichy in Forest Park,
Illinois, it was the first museum of
baseball to be established anywhere. A
non-profit organization dedicated to
the permanent preservation of baseball
records, pictures, autographed
baseballs, uniforms, souvenirs, to
perpetuate and develop interest in
baseball and further the development
and promotion of sportsmanship among
the youth.
In 1939 the museum
published a set of stamps created by Al Demaree, a former pitcher for the
Chicago Cubs and professional
cartoonist. The 1839-1939 "Centenial Of
Baseball" numbered stamps were issued
in panes of 25. (Centennial is
misspelled on the stamp) The "Poster" stamps were
produced, with each stamp to be affixed to pages in the booklet.
A box reserved for the stamp also
features a short career biography for
the "Immortals of the century of our
national game whose bronze plaques
adorn baseball's Hall Of Fame in
Cooperstown, NY. 1839 1939"
The book also features a "Baseball Quiz" with the Answers scattered on
different pages throughout the book.
Page 14 pictures businessman Emery A
Parichy, President of the Forrest Park
Baseball Museum, and together with page
15 describes how in 1934 he started the
baseball museum which predated the Hall
of Fame and opened to the public in
1935. The museum was described as
having many priceless relics, such as
bats, gloves, caps, and uniforms, many
of them autographed, which were
actually used by the famous players.
Page 15 features “an interior view
of the Forest Park Baseball Museum, 755
South Harlem Ave., Forest Park,
Illinois.”
Emery Parichy's concept of a baseball museum led to the creation of the
Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
Most of the Forrest Park Museum
collection, which he owned went to
Cooperstown. Emery Parichy also formed
The National Girls Baseball League,
1944-1954, a year after the
All-American Girls Professional
Baseball League (AAGPBL). It was formed
as a result of scouts for the
Chicago–based All–American Girls
Professional Baseball League scouting
and recruiting talent from the Chicago
softball Metropolitan League, run by
Parichy.
