This U.S.
All-Stars vs N.Y.C. All-Stars official
program is from the 3rd annual Hearst Sandlot Classic,
played on August 26, 1948. The contest
featured young sandlot stars from
across the country, playing against the
sandlot stars from New York City. The
William Randolph Hearst Sandlot Classic,
sponsored by the New York
Journal-American newspaper; was played in New York, at the
Polo Grounds from 1946 to 1958, and
Yankee Stadium from 1959 to 1965. The Hearst sandlot program
ultimately produced 50 Major League
Baseball players, including all-stars
Whitey Ford, Al Kaline, Joe Torre, Tony
Kubek, Bill Freehan, Mike Marshall,
Bill Monbouquette, and
Bill Skowron.
Babe Ruth served as chairman for
the Hearst Sandlot Classic, and the
pre-game ceremonies for the third
annual classic was scheduled to be a
tribute Ruth. Ten days before the game,
on August 16, Babe Ruth died of cancer.
The following day it was decided to
hold a memorial to Ruth, and the
invited dignitaries would instead pay
homage to the great Home Run hitter.
Among those present for the ceremonies
was Mayor William O'Dwyer of New York
City, President Ford Frick of the
National League, and Ed Barrow,former
Yankee executive and long-time friend
of the Babe.
The cover of the 13 page program depicts Babe Ruth
atop a monument of achievements. The
centerfold score card features a roster
for each team. Player profiles are
provided for both the N.Y.C All-Stars
and the U.S. All-Stars who won the game
9-7. The program has a letter from
Publisher, William Randolph Hearst,
"Youth Look To Us," and a tidbit "The Spirit
of Lou Gehrig" Written by
Journal-American
sportswriter/biographer, Frank Graham.
Pictured is Don Ferrarese the MVP from
1947, receiving the the Lou Gehrig
Trophy from Mrs. Lou Gehrig. (Al Kaline
won the award in 1951)
