This scorecard was produced for a promotional baseball game played on
July 18. 1964, between two teams made
up of the leading New York metropolitan
area disk jockeys and announcers. The
three-inning competition for the
Ballantine-Yankee Gold Cup, was played
at Yankee Stadium before the regular
season game. Phil Rizzuto's "Tote'm Homers"
took on Jerry
Coleman's "Ale Men."
Phil Rizzuto and Jerry Coleman, ex-Yankee
announcers,
served as managers of the two teams. Mel Allen, voice of the Yankees, served as commissioner of the new
league, responsible for rules as well
as the designation of three umpires,
three girls from the Broadway hit, "The Folies
Bergere." Red Barber was named the official scorer
of the inaugural game that would become
an annual event. The 1965 game was
played on June 26.
Each team was made up of on-the-air
radio and TV personalities, currently
working with Ballantine over the
airwaves. Among the personalities who
reach more than 10 million listeners in
the New York area include: WABC: Herb Oscar
Anderson and Scott Muni; WCBS: Jack
Sterling, Ted Steele, and Pat Summer-
all; WHOM: Jose Ramon; WINS: John
Holiday, Ed Hider, and Murray the K;
WJRZ; Mike Becker, Bob Brown, and Sal Marchiano; WMCA: Harry Harrison, Jack
Spector, Dan Daniel, and Johnny Dark;
WNBC: Big Wilson; WNEW: Gene Klavan,
Dee Finch, William B. Williams, Ted
Brown, Billy Taylor, and Kyle Rote;
WOR: Jean Shepherd.
The 3-Ring Baseball League, bi-fold scorecard lists the roster as of July
13, at the bottom of each card panel.
It was announced that others would be
added. The back panel features a Ballantine
Premium Beer, and Ale advertisement.
The 3-Ring
Baseball League Official Scorecard was
also printed for the event held in
Philadelphia, featuring Richie
Ashburn's "Ale Men" and Bill Campbell's
Beer Mugs.
