The Sheet music for "I Can't Miss That Ball Game,"
lyrics by George Moriarty, and music by
Joe Cooper, was published by Harry
Cooper Music Publishing Company.
Lyricist George Moriarty was a Major
League third baseman, who played for
the Chicago Cubs, New York Highlanders,
Detroit Tigers, and Chicago White Sox
from 1903 to 1916. From 1917 to 1940
Moriarty was an American League Umpire
interrupted only by a 2-year stint as
manager of the Detroit Tigers
(1927-1928).
It was common for Tin Pan Alley to print various copies of the same sheet
music featuring different photos of
vaudeville singers. Those singers
featured on the cover were actively
promoting the song and would receive
compensation, especially if the song
became a hit. This
sheet cover features the "Empire City
Quartet's Latest March Song." The
cover was also printed without any
featured singers.
The Empire City Quartet, were considered the
best performers in the
vaudeville circuit in 1910. The company
was composed of Harry Tally, Harry
Mayo, Irving Cooper, and Harry Cooper,
who published the sheet music.
Composer Joe Cooper was the 15 year-old
brother of the Coopers. The Quartet
performed a moving picture of the 1909
Pittsburg-Detroit championship series
on the sheet while singing it.
The lyrics in the song "Who's going to pitch? the teacher said, It's Matty Jimmy cried!"
refers to New York Giants pitcher
Christy Mathewson. The sheet cover-art
by Starmer, depicts four children
(three boys and a girl) in common
attire watching a baseball game through
holes in a wooden picket palisade style
fence. One hole remains unoccupied and
is marked, "Jimmy," the boy featured in
the song. (Lyrics below)
Detroit Tiger-Lyricist George Moriarty also wrote a baseball parody in
1910. (see left column below) Baseball
verse,
written to the tune of "Who's
Kissing Her Now" was based on an actual
occurrence in a ball game in one of the
eastern cities. Moriarty also wrote the
lyrics for the
1943 song "You're Gonna Win That Ball
Game - Uncle Sam !"

"Now Jimmy Jones," The
teacher said,
You Lied
just yesterday!
You told me that your ma
was ill,
And home you'd
have to stay.
But you went to the game
instead,
And just
because you lied.
Just take your slate and
rule,
and stay in after
school,
Then Jimmy Sobbed and
cried:
(Chorus)
I can't miss that ball game,
Gee It's going to be immense!
When the clock Strike
three, I ought to be
Looking through the knot
hole in the fence
If you let me go today,
I'll never break another
rule;
You can spank me till
I'm Lame,
For I can't
miss that game,
So please don't keep me
after school
"Who's going to pitch?" the teacher said,
It's Matty Jimmy cried!
And who's the other
baseball team?
Chicago
Jimmy sighed.
The teacher looked up at
the clock,
Then grabbed
his hat and fled,
He reached the game in
time,
with Jimmy close
behind,
Two seats the teacher
said
