The August 1959
issue of Boys' Life Magazine features
Mickey Mantle on the cover. There are
few vocations in which a fellow can
strong arm his way to success. But
Mickey Charles Mantle, with two strong
arms and fleet-if not so healthy-legs,
has slugged and raced his way to the
heights of his profession. Still
youthful, but a veteran experienced
enough to know humility, Mickey's story
is told in this issue. Color
photographer Ozzie Sweet caught Mantle
in action for the cover, and other
pictures which accompany the story on
page 26.
The story, "Star Of The Stadium" was written by Bob Hood, whose career
with Boy’s Life Magazine started in
1953 until 1986, when he retired after
serving as Editor-In-Chief for 22
years. There are no baseball related
advertisements, but there is a science
fiction story evolving baseball, "A
New Game - Baseball is our National
Game But It Exploded To Interplanetary
Proportions When an Unlucky Starship
Ran Out Of Fuel" by A.M. Lightner.
Boys'
Life was Published monthly by the Boy
Scout's of America since 1911, until
the name was change to "Scout Life" in
2011. This 1959 issue lists Dwight D.
Eisenhower as Honorary President. John
F. Kennedy
was the first president who was a Boy
Scout. And like all presidents from
William Howard Taft to Donald Trump,
and now Joe Biden (who was also a Boy
Scout) also served as Honorary President
of the Boy Scouts of America.
