Spalding's new design Pocket and Club
Score Books were first brought out in
1877. They were adapted for the
spectator of ball games, who scores for
his own amusement, as well as the
official club scorer, who records the
minutest detail. By this new system,
the art of scoring can be acquired in a
single game. Full instructions, with
the latest League rules, accompany each
book. There were 7 issues sold. Three
pocket Score Books, No. 1-3, and four
Club Score Books No. 4-7. The earliest
score books are titled "New and
approved" The score books can be
loosely dated using the baseball
equipment advertised in the book. Most
notably the baseball illustrations.
This Spalding's Official Base Ball Score Book No. 2 can be dated to
1900-1905. The No. 1 "Official League
Ball" illustration is shown in the
catalogs during this time period. In
1906 catalogs illustrate the No.
1 "Official National League"
baseball, and the illustrations before
1900 show the No. 1 "League Ball"
(Adopted by the National League).
