Spalding's new design Pocket and Club
Score Books were first brought out in
1877. They were adapted for the
spectator of ball games, who scores for
his own amusement, as well as the
official club scorer, who records the
minutest detail. By this new system,
the art of scoring can be acquired in a
single game. Full instructions, with
the latest League rules, accompany each
book. There were 7 issues sold. Three
pocket Score Books, No. 1-3, and four
Club Score Books No. 4-7. The earliest
score books are titled "New and
approved" The score books can be
loosely dated using the baseball
equipment advertised in the book. Most
notably the baseball illustrations.
This Spalding Official Base Ball Score
Book No. 3 can be dated to 1926 by the
statement made in the "Important
notice" advertisement on the back
cover; "Our No. 1 Official National
League Base Ball for 1926
will
Contain the New Cushion Cork Ceter" The
word "Will" used to express the future
tense. In 1926 Spalding introduced
"this ball used in the World Series of
1925," and continued it's use until
1933, when in 1934 Spalding introduced
the baseball that featured the "John A.
Heydler Pres." stamped signature on the
sweet spot. Score books made after 1926
have different wording in the ad.
