The Baseball Encyclopedia
is a baseball reference book first
published by The Macmillan Company in 1969. Nine
further editions of the book were
released between 1974 and 1996.
Endorsed by Baseball Commissioner Bowie
Kuhn as "baseball's finest and most
complete record book." (see letter
below left) The
encyclopedia was Baseball's first
computer-accurate record book.
Seven times more data than any other baseball book,
computer-authenticated, it required
$1.5 million and over 3 1/2 years of
research to produce. The Baseball
Encyclopedia has over 2,300 pages, and
more than 1,300,000 facts. Complete
records of 10,400 major league players,
Batting average, home runs, and 15
other categories for every batter for
every season. Win, losses, and 16 other
categories for every pitcher, for every
season. Records on every World Series
and All Star Game. Corrects hundreds of
long-standing errors
in a 1969 promotion, when you
purchased "The Baseball Encyclopedia"
direct from the publisher for $25.00,
you received a free copy of
"The Glory of Their Times" that sold for $7.95.
The official library edition
encyclopedia came in a black & white
slip-case picturing a ball game in
progress. It caries the seals of the
American and National Leagues.
