NOTES:

In 1950 F.J. Low published The Jackie Robinson Story by Arthur Mann. This was published as a tie-in with the popular film of the same title that starred Jackie himself. Sportswriter Arthur Mann, who wrote the book, a co-author of the Jackie Robinson movie. Mann an assistant to Branch Rickey in 1946, was also instrumental in signing Jackie Robinson with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947.  He also wrote the 1957 biography "Branch Rickey American in Action."

Mann spent the first two weeks rewriting the story line with the producer's associate of the movie, and then rewriting the screen play with Lawrence Taylor, the co-author. After the shooting Mann remained for the cutting and the scoring, in order to make sure that the story was exactly as it was supposed to be.

The book is Mann's account of Robinson's transition from the Negro Leagues to become the first modern African-American to play in the major leagues. The first book about him was Jackie Robinson: My Own Story by Jackie Robinson as told to Wendell Smith (Avon Books, 1949). This digest paperback reprinted the 1948 Greenberg hardcover.
