Tip Top Weekly magazine, was published
by Street & Smith from 1896 through 1912
when the title was changed to "New Tip
Top Weekly" and published under
that title until 1915. Promoted as "An Ideal
Publication for The American Youth,"
the short stories in the magazine
surround the sporting adventures of
fictional characters Dick and Frank Merriwell. Tip Top Weekly was edited by
Frederick Tilney and Gilbert Patten,
who wrote under the pseudonym Burt L.
Standish. Gilbert Patten, aka Burt L.
Standish wrote hundreds of "Medal
Library" Dime Novels published by
Street & Smith featuring the Merriwell's.
The 1904 issue (above) with a
price of .05 cents per copy, pictures a fielder
"Gathering in a Hot Grounder" and
at the top Boasts as being the "Largest Weekly
Circulation In America" The back of
this issue promotes The Tip Top
Baseball Tournament of 1904, with a
chance to win team equipment and
baseball Outfits.
The Tip Top weekly stories of the adventures of Dick & Frank Merriwell,
cover a wide range of sports that
includes: Ranch & Rodeo, Fencing, Track
& Field, Gymnastics, Boxing, Football,
Hockey and Baseball. They did it all.
Up until
1907 the many baseball covers include
dual
titles, such as "Frank Merriwell's Fast Nine or
Champions of the County," "Dick
