"The
Millionaires" March Two-Step by C.D. Henninger, was published in 1908 by
Vandersloot Music
Pub. Co.,
of Williamsport, PA.
One of the earliest promotions tied to
Williamsport baseball entailed the
commissioning of a music composition to
celebrate the Williamsport
Millionaires' 1908 Tri-State League
Championship Season. The cover features a photograph taken
by A.F. Zimmermann, the only
surviving image of the 1908 team.
The Williamsport Millionaires were a minor league baseball team based in
Williamsport, Pennsylvania from 1906 to
1910. Once the Lumber Capital of the
World, Williamsport, the “city of
millionaires,” had more
millionaires per person than any other
city in the USA. The team adopted the
nickname. The high school baseball team
still uses this name.
The Millionaires ball club finished the
1908 season with a record of 82-45,
good for a first place finish in the
Independent Tri-State League under
manager Harry Wolverton. A total of 12
ballplayers from this team played in
the major leagues; Manager/Players
Harry Wolverton, Birdie Cree,
Tom Doran, Eddie Foster, Warren Miller,
Tom O'Hara, Dave Shean, Jack Stansbury,
Happy Townsend, Jack Warhop, Jack Flater,
and Harry Kane.
Additional players from the 1907
championship team included notables; -
Slim Sallee, Walter Blair, Joe
Delahanty, Rube Manning, Jimmy Sebring,
Rube Vickers and Tom Walker.
