NOTES:

Pittsburgh\ Pirates ballplayer, Roberto Clemente was killed in a plane crash off the coast of Puerto Rico on December 31, 1972 attempting to fly relief supplies to earthquake victims in Nicaragua. Paul New, a Pittsburgh-born Chicago entertainer, was driving home from a club date at 4:30 a.m. on January 1, 1973, when he heard the shocking bulletin from San Juan on the radio. Before going to bed, New sat down and wrote what became "The Ballad of Roberto Clemente."

New, obtained a $1,500. loan from the bank of Elk Grove to make the original record, called "Roberto" at a recording studio in Benenville. The record sold for $2.00, and $1.00 of that was sent to the Roberto Clemente foundation. With the urging of friends and business associates, New made second recording at Universal Studios in Chicago with a full orchestra and chorus. The name of the recording was change to "The Ballad of Roberto Clemente," and it was distributed around the country.

The 45RPM record in tribute to Roberto Clemente was recorded on the 3B record label. Side A - "The Ballad of Roberto Clemente" by Paul New, features an instrumental trumpet solo by Pepi Lattanzi. Side B - "The Ballad of Roberto Clemente" vocals performed by Paul New. The back of the 45's picture cover features Clemente's career biography. Above reads: "Roberto Clemente His Three loves... his country, baseball and children" Below reads: "To perpetuate his dreams, contributions can be sent to, The Roberto Clemente Memorial Fund, Pittsburgh Pirates, Box-21, Three Rivers Stadium, Pittsburgh, PA. 15212"

"The Ballad Of Roberto Clemente" - Lyrics 1973
Written and Composed by Paul New

Got a tear in my eye
And I'm pacing the floor,
Searching for things to say.
I just lost my hero
On a cold New Year's day.
Called the local papers
To verify the news.
I've been watching all the channels
But they all gave me the blues.

I saw him play his first game back in 1955.
Eighteen Years have come between,
But he still had the same great drive.
The first few words my daughter could say
Were his first and his last name.
When I'd come home from workin' late,
She'd say, Daddy, the won the game."

I watched that man for eighteen years
He could hit, run and throw.
But now the plane we lost him
On a plane he had to go.
He  come tearing round the bases,
Letting nothing stand in his way.
That's the way he lived his life, until that final day.

Last year I gave him a statue,
that friend had made for me.
I also wrote a little note,
that I wish the world could see.
May every son of every man,
If Playing ball shall be,
Have the pride, and the grace of Roberto Clemente.

Now I've watched that man for eighteen years
He could hit, run and throw.
But now the plane we lost him
On a plane he said he had to go.
He come tearing round the bases,
Letting nothing stand in his way.
But that's the way he lived his life, until that final day.

He made it home, He made it home,
Oh God, Roberto made it home.
Yes he made it home, he made it home.
No more in the field where Roberto roamed.
Cause he made it home, Yea he made it home.
Dear God, Roberto safely home.
He made it home, Yea he made it home.
No more in the field where Roberto roamed.
Cause he made it home, Yea he made it home.
Roberto, Roberto safely home
Cause he made it home, he made it home.
No more in right field, will Roberto roam.
