The wild card was established for
Major League Baseball's playoffs in
1994. Both the American and National
Leagues were restructured, from two
divisions each to three. The team with
the best record in the league, that did
not win their division advanced to the
play-offs. The First Wild Card game
would have to wait until 1995 because
of the player strike, due the post
season being canceled, on September 14,
1994.
The "Game A" 1995 American League Division Series ticket stub was
used for the first American
League Wild Card game in baseball
history. The game was played at Yankee
Stadium, on October 3, 1995, vs the
Seattle Mariners. "Game B" was used for
the second game of the best of five
playoff series. The Mariners would go
on to win the American League Division
Series in game 5, played at Seattle's
Kingdome.
This series was special to Yankee fans, finally after 14 years, Don
Mattingly got his first chance at the
Post Season. Donnie Baseball responded
with a 2 for for 4 night, an RBI, and a
Run Scored. Wade Boggs, and Ruben
Sierra hit Home Runs. The Yankees
became the
American League's first Wild
Card team in history, to win a playoff
game despite 2 Home Runs by Seattle's
Ken Griffey Jr. (3 for 5, 2 HRS,
3RBI's, 3 Runs Scored) This was Ken
Griffey Jr.'s first career post season
Home Run.
